Awesome Rowing and Handstand Clinic! (Notes now included) 5

A HUGE thank you to Kelly and Joan for coaching, we had great time Saturday! Also thank you to Susan for taking these pictures and suggesting that we work on rowing a little more. More thanks to Joan for making this happen.

There was a total of 15 athletes attending! Half of the group worked with Kelly on rowing technique and the other half with Joan on pressing to a handstand then we switched.

This was a workout that focused on practicing a couple of skills that we will start working on in classes so that we can include them in workouts. You will see a change to our warm-ups to reflect the new knowledge we got from these experts. We have some interest in getting onto the water (for rowing obviously, not handstands ;-)), so watch for an announcement for a trip to Marin.

For those who missed, this is a pretty good video that covers what most of what we covered. We will be adding some additional info in class. In particular, note that his stroke rate is 22 strokes/minute.

Finally, thank you to all the athletes who attended, it was the start to a great weekend. I hope to include some more fun activities like this during the summer. As always, if you have a suggestion about something to work on or an activity for a group of us to do, please tell me and/or post.

Here are Kelly’s notes.

It was so wonderful to finally visit Mad Dawg and meet even more of your athletes! You guys have a great box and a fantastic community. Thanks for letting me hang out with you at Sectionals and I look forward to cheering your team on in Irvine!

After X years of thinking I knew how to row, I finally did get the idea of it. Not to mention I did a tripod stand with a straddle (unheard of previously). So a day of great instruction…And for free!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Yeah, being able to do a tripod handstand as often as I wanted, with a stradle was great. And learning more about the rower was also great.

So… when are we going on the water?
