After listening to my story, Cathy thinks this is what happened: On Jan 30, the last evening workout of the year we did the 2 shoulder press, 4 push press, 6 push jerk on 4 min interval workout. I hurt my mid-back on the last push jerk of round 4. I finished the workout but just barely. I was stiff for a while, especially so this last week with really only one workout this year. Sunday I tried to do a light workout and did some muscle and power snatches. On my 50 KG power snatch, Cathy thinks that because my mid-back was locked up, all the force went to my lower back and I strained/sprained it. This morning I was more than a little freaked out on how painful it was, but now, after an adjustment and some ice and ibuprofin, it is better. I am still going to cancel classes Monday and all mornings this week to be cautious (Cathy said mornings would be the worst) and am targeting Tuesday afternoon to start back up again. Thanks for your patience and hope to see you soon.
It sucks being hurt, but there is a little humor/irony in being a strength coach with a hurt back. Who would of thought I needed so many muscles to engage my emergency brake? On a similar, but way more severe note: Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions — motion, speech, self-awareness — shut down one by one.

Oh no, Saul! It’s terrible that you are hurt. Hope your back feels better soon!!
Yes, Saul, get some rest!
Hey Saul, sorry about the bad news but definitely take care of yourself first. Everything else can wait. Let me know if you need help with the Saturday classes. 😉
Oh Man.. this sucks.. hope you get better soon… How did you hurt yourself?
On a separate note I just finished watching the Jill Bolte Taylor and it is so fantastic I had to share it with all my contacts. What’s truly amazing is that she lived to tell the story. What a unique experience!
Saul, thanks for sharing.
Saul, thanks for posting the video. I have this woman’s book about her experience, someone had recommended it to me a few months ago and I ordered it on Amazon. It has been sitting on my desk for a long time, and watching this has inspired me to pick it up and read it ASAP! What a story…
Hey Saul, so sorry to hear you got hurt. I remember that 12/30 workout being hard on the joints/back. Aside from naproxen (way better than ibuprofen in my experience), the Thai massage lady might be able to straighten you out if you’re for it. Let me know if you want me to ring her for you. Hang in there!
Saul that sucks! I hope you are doing better…
Being hurt sucks…the worst part is not working out. It makes me feel depressed and lazy
